OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha police are warning residents about a recent rash of daytime burglaries around the city. Investigators said burglars are hitting the southeast part of the city the hardest.

The problem is serious enough that police are posting flyers asking for help in reporting suspicious activity. They're also asking residents to lock all doors and windows, even when residents are home.

Mike Wertz said the warning is valid. Someone broke into his car near 162nd and Q Street, Thursday morning, stealing his wife's purse. Their garage door was left open accidentally.

Hise wife's car keys, house keys and cell phone were all missing, Wertz said.

Police said a few hours later, her credit cards had been used at Walgreen's and someone withdrew money from several ATMs.
Investigators said more than $1,500 was charged to one of the cards belonging to the non profit group, Omaha Parents of Multiples Club. Wertz's wife is treasurer of the organization.

"Just the fact that they didn't come into the house is a blessing," said Wertz.
Omaha Police Sgt. Meg Fricke said the Wertz family is lucky.

"There seems to be some where people are just knocking on the door, with no entrance. They'll go ahead and force the door open, go inside, ransack the home and take various items and a lot of electronics," Fricke said.

Investigators said beware of thieves initially stealing garage door openers from vehicles.

"We're seeing a lot of windows broken out. And all that's happened is the glove box is ransacked and the garage door opener is taken," Fricke said.

She said burglars will find the address of a home by checking information on the car's registration, often located in the glove box.

"You say 'phew nothing's happened,' and then two weeks later, three weeks later, your house has been broken into," Fricke said.

Wertz said his family isn't taking any chances. He said they've changed all the locks on their home.
