Have you called your senator?

Today the Legislature sees LB958 on the agenda. In all honesty, it likely won't be debated today as it's far down the list.

Regardless, this threat is very real and very much on the agenda.

A lot of you have been telling me what lawmakers say in response to your calls and messages. The lawmakers say they have been getting a lot of calls on this bill. We need to keep this pressure up.

Even if you live in Sen. Schimek or Sen' Ashford's district, contact them. If they know this bill will face a lot of pressure, they may not fight as hard and waste the time.

Call, write, or e-mail today.

Remember, personalized messages are FAR MORE EFFECTIVE than bulk e-mails. If you want to send a form letter, take the minimal effort to personally address each message and send them one at a time. It makes a difference, folks.

What I've heard so far:
Opposed to LB958 (good guys)
- Langemeier
- Pankonin
- Fulton
- Lautenbaugh
- Christensen
- Fischer
- Hudkins
- Burling
- Cornett
- Dubas

Maybe opposed
- Gay
- Pedersen (if AM1964 passses)
- White
- Pirsch
- Stuthman
- Friend

Supportive (boooo!)
- Ashford
- Howard

Maybe supportive (maybe boooo!)
-

Don't hesitate. Call. Write. E-mail.

Today.

Then get two friends or family to do the same.

Put Gwen Howard on the "Supports LB 958 List". Her reply to my email in opposition follows. (Note that she thinks the Bill is a "reasonable approach".)

Thank you for letting me know your views about LB 958.

The Judiciary Committee has spent a great deal of time working on this issue
since the tragic shooting at Von Maur where an assault style weapon was used by
Robert Hawkins. The bill, as amended by the Judiciary Committee, would create
the Assault Weapons Commission which would have the task of creating a
definition of an assault weapon. The commission will include law enforcement
and judicial officials as well a retailer of firearms. The interests of gun
owners will be represented on the commission.

The commission will deliver their findings by 2009 to the Legislature. The
Legislature will use the recommendations of the commission to determine what
type of assault weapons should be allowed in this state. Any final decisions
will be made by the Legislature. The commission will update their list every
two years.

I believe this is a reasonable approach to looking at this emotional issue. I
believe the concerns of all interested parties will have the opportunity to have
their concerns heard by this commission.

I appreciate your taking the time to write.

Sincerely,

Gwen Howard
State Senator

SOmebody tell Ms. Howard that she should confine her Legislating to Logical issues, not emotional ones. Unless of course, her heart contains more brain cells than her head............
