Dear Sen. Xxxx Xxxxxxx;

I am writing to you to express my concern with LB958, as amended by the Judiciary Committee.

While I wholeheartedly support the idea of reducing violence, a blanket ban on firearms based solely on their cosmetic appearance is not the answer.

So-called "assault weapons" are not the problem. The FBI reports that "Even weapons misclassified as “assault weapons” (common in the former Federal and California "assault weapons" confiscations) are used in less than 1% of all homicides."

Banning the legal sale and ownership of a certain firearm will not stop criminals, who rarely buy their firearms and are usually prohibited from owning a gun already. The U.S Department of Justice has found that "Five out of six gun-possessing felons obtained handguns by theft, and “[the] criminal handgun market is overwhelmingly dominated by informal transactions and theft as mechanisms of supply.”

This proposal is akin to banning the Corvette because it looks like it's faster than a Nissan Maxima.

Please, I ask you to oppose this measure when it is brought to the floor. Instead of wasteful feel-good legislation, let's devote time and energy to addressing the root cause of crime and violence: Poverty, social issues, lack of parental guidance, mental health.

What this bill proposes is to prescribe pain medication for a leg ache instead of setting the broken leg bone.
