Firsthand account of the Von Maur shooting

The Shack has the privilege of being able to talk with one of the witnesses from the third floor of the Von Maur store at Westroads Mall in Omaha.

On the condition of anonymity, he has agreed to tell his account of what happened. He will only be identified by the moniker NW.

I was given the first draft of this account Thursday morning, 12/6/07. The only changes that have been made were mostly grammatical and organizational. NW's account has not changed. He has opted to leave any inaccuracies (such as the gun identification) as it was originally written in order to properly show how the mind works in this condition.

I have agreed to post his story account as is, with only minor edits for spelling and grammar. The bulk of this was written about 14 hours after the event occurred. There is an update at the end.

His story presents an interesting issue for CCW holders in such a situation: Shoot or no shoot. Hide or flee. Help or don’t help.

Please look at the post after this account as I have put up a practice drill (The Von Maur Drill) that is designed based on this man’s scenario.

With that, I now turn the blog over to NW.

The shooting
I took a later lunch that day because I had a noon phone meeting with a company out of New York, apparently we’re not on the same lunch schedule. I also planned to take a one-hour lunch that day, instead of a 30-minute lunch, so I could go to Van Maur and pick up some gifts for my wife. We were both there on the evening of Dec 03 with my 1-year-old daughter, and my wife tried on some coats and showed me some bath robes she liked, so I knew exactly what I was going for that day.

I asked a co-worker (named K for this story) for directions to Van Maur from my place of business. as she knew a faster route that would get me there quicker.

I left work around 1:15 to 1:20 and arrived at the front doors of Van Maur at 1:35 (shooting -7), I remember specifically looking at my watch as walked in. I came in the south entrance to Van Maur, right by the elevators.

I proceeded to 2nd floor using the escalator around 1:36 (shooting
-6 minutes). I soon picked up a coat that my wife liked. I spent a couple

minutes there because I was still not completely sure about picking

the white coat or black coat. I checked my watch and realized time was

running out, so I picked the white one. This was about 1:39 (shooting

-3).

Then I again took the escalator to the third floor.I went over to the bath robes near the bra section, which is by

customer service. I was standing close to the north wall, by the east

corner. I walked around the robes a bit to see if there were any last

minute changes about what I wanted to get, then I proceeded to the

rack of robes that my wife had expressed interest in.

At this point I don't have a time line, but the events unfolded follows:

I heard gunshots, about 8. I knew exactly what they were, but my brain

didn't want me to believe it.

I looked towards the escalators because it sounded like they came from

there. I could not place the direction the shots came from because I

was surrounded by 4 walls and standing nearly in a corner.

I stood there for maybe 8 seconds (time enough to change a magazine),

then I heard several more shots. Somehow, then I focused in on the

shooter. He was towards the south wall, in the east corner, maybe 30

degrees to my left. He was about 30 yards away. He was shooting

towards the west and I had a nice side view of him.

He was wearing what looked like a solid green sleeveless vest, and was

shooting a semi-automatic rifle. I could see sleeves of a shirt that did not match the vest. The vest did not look military or camouflage, but to me looked green.

To me, at the time, I thought the rifle might be an AR15. One thing I

noticed, it appeared that the empty shells were ejecting out of the

left side of the gun instead of the right, which doesn't make sense

and could of been an illusion. All I could see were mostly the black

parts of the gun. The stock of the gun was the black frame style,

instead of a wood stock.

The shooter had brown or black hair, and I remember it being cut quite

Short, but not buzzed. He had the gun up to his cheek and was shooting in rapid

succession doing quick maneuvers with the gun. At first, It went

through my mind that this guy was some sort of military and this was a

terrorist attack. I could see the shells ejecting from the gun.

The way he was walking and shooting, calmly, no yelling, made me think that there was more than one shooter and they were performing a "clean sweep". He was aiming down the barrel of the gun, and shooting rapidly.

At this point, I stared for nearly 5 seconds, until I turned and

ducked down and started running. I want to make note of this point in

time, as I will come back to it.

I was running towards the north wall and somehow making my way farther

towards the east wall at the same time, putting myself in the corner

even more. There were maybe five people who started walking fast

looking in the direction of the shooter. I am not sure if they could

see him or just heard the commotion. When they saw that I was running

like heck, others started running, too.

People were running into the dressing rooms. I got near the door and

decided that is not where I wanted to be. I ran west a few yards

uncertain of what to do or where to go. I was trapped. But then I

focused in on an emergency exit and ran out of it. The alarm sounded.

It was loud, but I think it was only an alarm attached to the door, not sure if it set the whole store alarms off, but they were loud shreiking alarms, not continuous, but a pulse type alarm.

I ended up in some gray hallway with a set of stairs and very little room to move side to side. I ran down one set of stairs to 2nd floor.

There was a door there and I almost went through it. But I heard more

gunshots that sounded like they were on the other side of the door. I

believe I turned and I jumped over the stair railing to the next landing, skipping

the stairs completely. I do not remember the impact, and I do not

remember if I jumped down a whole floor, or ran down the first half of

the stairs and jumped down the rest. I am not certain of this point due to the fear I felt at this point after hearing more gunshots I thought was on 2nd floor, confirming in my mind there were multiple shooters.

I ran down a small hallway and found a door to the outside, but it would not open. It was a double door with a push bar. At this point, I had to make a decision. Do I wait here or get out?

I didn’t know what or who was on the other side of the door, and but I decided to go for it because I was trapped at the end of a hallway with no where to go. I pushed the door hard and it still would not give, so I kicked the push bar and the door flung open.

I was now outside, on Van Maur’s loading dock on the east side, I looked to my right and there was a long trash can close to the wall. I jumped over a rail, off the dock between the garbage can and the wall. I ran along this until I came to the end of both the garbage can and wall. I then realized that I was still carrying the coat I was going to by my wife. For some reason, I decided to drop it, and probably ruined it.

Then I ran out into the parking lot, which is between the mall and the parking garage. I didn’t know what to do next. I tried to call 911 on my phone with no luck. I yelled to some guy to call 911. Then I asked him if he had a gun I could use. I was freaking out, and in reality probably would not have gone back in. However, I was worried about someone picking off people in the lot, or coming out charging with guns firing. I had no idea how many shooters were in there.

I borrowed a lady’s cell phone, and she was worried I was going to run off with it. But 911 was busy, so I knew people were probably called. It took FOREVER for the cops to get there, I estimated the time as10 minutes but the news says 6.

During this time I did not know what to do. I almost just went for my car and left, but I realized that couldn’t be right. It was like someone pulled a fire alarm at the store, so I thought about just leaving and let everyone else figure it out. I decided that was the wrong thing to do..

I walked around to the north side and saw all the cops loading up. I yelled to them, “I saw what is going on. The guy has an M-16 type gun. If you need information, I can give it or else I am outta here.” A police lieutenant pulled me aside and I ended up in a cop car.

Minutes later another witness joined me. She said she was right beside me on the 3rd floor before the shooting. We were both very shaken up. My lungs were burning because I nearly did a full sprint down 3 floors. The cold air hit my lungs hard.

I was later taken to J.C. Penney and interviewed. At first, the interviewer was taking notes, but when he realized how involved I was I had start over, this time with a tape recorder running

I was then escorted to my car and I stopped back by work. I arrived at work around 4pm, which means my interview ended around 3:30 – 3:45.

My feelings

When I heard the first round of gunshots, I knew what they were but didn’t want to believe it. I tried to think that they were balloons or fireworks. However, I definitely took a defensive stance ready to run.

When I saw the shooter, I stood there for nearly 5 seconds just watching.

Why?

First, he was firing 90 degrees away from me. The thing is, this image was nothing new to me. I see people shooting all the time at the range, on TV, in video games. But what my brain was having a hard time processing was that was Van Maur.

Now back to the point I referenced earlier.

Honestly, and as God as my witness, when I saw him shooting and as watched for a few seconds trying to figure out what he was going to do and what I should do, the thought that when through my mind was, “If I had a gun, I have a perfect shot.”

Yes, a perfect shot. I had a full side profile, I was close, and no one was visible behind him execept a wall. I had a clear shot during the second round of fire. I told this to every cop I came in contact with. The interviewer agreed.

When I realized that I had no gun, fear instantly struck me, along with anger, and severe panic.

I ran hard.

I did not think to try to help people, I just got out.

While I was running, I kept hearing shots. In my mind, I could see myself getting shot in the back, bullets ripping through me and blood spraying in front of me.

Interestingly, I was still able to make decisions. I knew the dressing room was a bad place. When I realized I was trapped in a corner, more fear set in and I almost went for the dressing room, but then I saw the emergency exit.

I instantly started second-guessing that decision as well. For all I knew, there were more shooters waiting for people to try to escape. But realizing that I was wide open to attack, I ran out the emergency door.

As I ran down the stairs, all kinds of thoughts started occurring. What if a shooter was coming up the stairs? What if one followed me down? Every decision I made was second-guessed, should I just stop or keep going?

I kept going, and due to luck, I was fine. There was only one shooter, and he did not set any boobytraps.

Luck.

God.

Luck.

That’s all. My decisions were fairly limited and all I could do is go where the doors and hallways took me.

After my interview, as I was being escorted by the cops to my car, I saw the nice, white coat still there by the garbage can. I pointed it out to my interviewer who was escorting me, hoping maybe he’d let me go pick it up to possibly save it. But, it was a lost cause. I would have gone back later and paid for it.

This part of the story may be removed later, but I will have it here for now.

I do not have a Concealed Handgun Permit. I have completed the training class, but I keep putting off applying for the permit because I think it is useless. In the places I would need a gun most, I am not allowed to have it. I will not be a person living in fear and not go to Van Maur because they don’t allow guns.

My point that Open Carry needs to be easier in Omaha, and places like Westroads need to take down their “no guns” signs.

If I had my gun deeply concealed, I wouldn’t have been able to draw it very fast. However, If I had open carried, I could of drawn instantly.

Either way though, I could have drawn and taken a clean shot. However, in both cases, regardless of the laws, I am not allowed to carry a gun at all in Westroads Mall. If the laws did not oppress my rights, I would carry a gun most places (except work). I would certainly have had it in the mall as mall shootings have been on my mind since the incident at a mall involving a shotgun back in February.

My wife is somewhat cautious about guns as is my sister-in-law. After this event, both are now pro-guns. In addition, I will never again be caught without a gun.

I later learned from the news that people were shot at customer service (to my right) and the children’s section (in front of me, off to the left). This means it was only luck this guy did not target me, as I was closer to him than some of the people he shot. I have a second chance at life.

What really irks my gut is that I was just there at Van Maur on Monday night with my wife and daughter. What if they were with me this time? Escape like I did would not of been possible.

I am very angry at the city of Omaha and the mall for their stupid laws that nearly cost me my life. The laws protected no one, and in my opinion, caused people to die.

Will I go to the media? Maybe. I can’t make a decision now because I am still shaken up. I got very little sleep last night. I need to let my head clear. Nothing I do right now is going to change the outcome and near brush with death.

Right now I have been practicing with my .40 S&W Beretta, replaying the situation in my mind.

I could have done it, no problem, no hesitation, no regrets. This was a test of my soul, and the results are in and I know them for certain.

I am going to go buy some “gear,” then go to the shooting range for some target practice.

My knnee hurts and my legs and lungs still burn. I cannot recall how high of jump I took, but I am going back to Van Maur to find out.

UPDATE 12/6/07 - I went to a local shooting range and purchased several silhouette targets. I then put the targets down range, to the approximate place I think the shooter would have been.

It seems it may be between 40 and 50 meters based on my memory. I used my Beretta 90-Two (.40 S&W) and shot each target several times with 6 round magazines. I mostly aimed for the head because that is probably what I would have done in the mall, as I didn't know if he was wearing a vest or not.

My accuracy to the head was about 4 out of 6, depending on how fast I fired. For the shots I missed the head, they still hit the neck or the chest. A few test cases, I missed the head by an inch. I would of been shooting up at a slight angle so the missed shots would of went higher than most people stand.

I then took body shots and my accuracy was near 100% on the target, though not necessarily in the kill zone. I conclude I could have taken the shots with decent accuracy and been effective. I cannot predict the outcome, except that I would of rather been shooting at the killer, instead of crossing my fingers, turning my back, and running away. Even if I only wounded him, I could of run in closer for more accuracy. Call me crazy, it may be true, but running away like I did was more crazy and more risky with my life. I just got lucky.

I do want to say that when I talk about that I could of stopped the
killer, I am not trying to make a political statement. I am simply saying if

I were allowed to carry a gun, I would have and I would have used it.

That is a hard fact. I am not trying to be a hero and say that I would

have tried to save lives. I am saying that I was trying to save my life,

and if my family was there, their lives as well. There is nothing

"hero" about what I am saying, it's about survival.

I feel that I am alive today because of luck. I chose to run, but it was not a choice. I was forced to run. Many will say that is the right choice. I say it is the choice that requires luck. ALOT of luck with the position I was in.

Use of deadly force at times may also require luck. But, it also depends upon skill, awareness, and practice. These are things I can control, and these are things I trust far more than luck

The statements I am making today are my own, and represent my personal views and my views alone. It may or may not be the views of my family, friends, employer, other professional affiliates, or anyone or thing affiliated with me in any way of form other than myself.

Thanks, NW.

Stay safe;

Thank you for sharing the story. I know it has to be extremely difficult to re-hash those memories.

Very moving narrative. It makes me think about what I would do in similar circumstances. Which I hope I am never in.

Wow, send this to all the news agencies, get interviews, spread the word.

God bless from a fellow Omahan. Hopefully more people will understand from this travesty that the "no guns allowed" sign didn't protect anyone, and instead condemned them.

This guy should have been dropped after the first few shots. In southwest Iowa, where concealed carry is welcome at our merchants, he wouldn't have made it very far.

Westroads, we won't be doing any shopping with your merchants this Christmas.

"Gun-Free Zones" should be more appropriately called "Second Amendment Infringement Zones".

Thanks for this. I hope your story gets out to the millions of Americans who see no need for guns in todays society...or more correctly, see no need to protect themselves, their loved one, their friends, families, or neighbors.

When seconds are all that stand between life and death, the cops will be there in minutes.

Wow sums it up nicely.. very impressive read.

One thing to add, with body armor, arm pits and most times even the sides are not protected. Shooting at the shoulder gives a good chance of hitting vital organs(heart and lungs). Good reason to always keep penetration in mind when selecting ammo.

Thank you for posting such a compelling eyewitness account!

I'd like to note that one thing I take away from it is this:

If I had my gun deeply concealed, I wouldn’t have been able to draw it very fast.

Granted. But if he indeed was standing there for five seconds staring at the shooter, that sounds like more than enough time to draw from a tucked IWB holster and (if you're carrying in condition II) rack the slide. I think I could accomplish that in less than two seconds (once my brain kicked in...)

paramedic70002 said...

The witness describes a close haircut yet video of the shooter seems to show a mop head. Are we sure there wasn't a second shooter, or can stress account for this glaring contradiction?

Ferris? Supreme Court? Anyone?

I just turned in my application for a permit to carry to my sheriff I'm not going to go into a mall until I get my card. In Minnesota the law makes those signs mostly ineffective, if you ignore the sign and someone notices that you are carrying and they can ask you to leave if you do there is no crime, if you don't the crime is a petty misdemeanor. Also in Minnesota:
"A landlord may not restrict the lawful carry or possession of firearms by tenants or their guests."
So a sign at the entrance of a mall doesn't really mean anything.

Well, I've lived in Missouri too long, so I'm now a skeptic by nature.

If, in fact, the posted account is genuine, I expect significant post traumatic stress to occur. I understand that the mall was posted as a "gun free zone," so they are essentially assuming responsibility for patron safety. Someone needs to sue them. With a lot of national PR to go along with it. I'm thinking the victim should start at $10,000,000 or so...

Like the dead or the author of the post?

Like Columbine, trained to run away! let anyone die that is not law enforcement! That is the mantra of LE. Sad but all too true.

This guy had nothing to offer sans a target, he ran, I don’t blame him in the least. As for his wanderings about if he had had a gun and yadayada, it don’t matter. Fantasies are fun for all.

The possibility does exist that had he had a weapon and used it, some lives could have been saved. I’ve no doubt. The perps are no doubt basically cowards and any advance upon them would hassen their self demise. Cuz they desire personal death as an assurance, when confronted they will shoot first,.. only the correct target, themselves. The one they should have started with, not ended with.

But the poster is in reality living is some fantasy world of what ifs. Reality is he was not in a position to do anything other then he did. No amount of desire can ever change that for him. Or those that died as the result of a very phuked up kid either.

A mall’s policies can’t supersede state law! EVER!

Another reality is that, IIRC, not a single crime has been perpetrated by a CCW carrier in the nation, attributable to a weapons violation, since those laws have been on the books. I could be wrong, but don’t think I am.

The Truth Must Be Known said...

Hi..I was wondering if you can comment on the kid who is blamed for this shooting massacre? Do you feel it was the kid that the media is showing, or did you see someone else?

Based on what you said, that the shooter you saw had a green vest on, and short hair, it couldn't of been him...unless he went to the bathroom to cut his hair, and stole a green vest from a store, which I feel is highly unlikely.

JoeMerchant24 said...

Freedom Fiends;

As was stated in the introduction, this was written in the first hours after the incident.

NW knows some of his memories are inaccurate (such as the rifle looking like an AR) but he has decided to leave them in as that's what his mind saw in the stress.

That said, the mug shot the press has been running is obviously from before the event. The woman who had taken him in said to Anderson Cooper that he had recently gotten a decent haircut.

Ask any police officer and they will tell you how inaccurate eyewitness accounts are. NW felt that the first, maybe not 100% right version was the most "truthful" as opposed to a story that he several days (and several others' accounts) from which to "remember" things.

I concur.

What you have read is what he remembers.

Can anyone say Psyop?

I've see photos & video footage of Robert Hawkins in the mall. The photo of the shooter, and the photo of Robert walking in the mall don't add up. Their two different people.

It's amazing how a mall with how many security cameras in it can only give us such little footage of him?

On the numberous accounts I've heard of people who have been there and saw the shooter, they all said he had a short military style haircut, and a green vest on.

Watch the video of him entering & leaving, then supposebly entering again (you can't see his face as he enters again, so I can't say for sure it's him.)

Check out 2 different photos of him in the mall?

Can anyone tell me how can you gain weight, grow chin hair, and become shorter in a matter of minutes?

So much disinformation in the media. So much is not being told.

This was a psyop. Just like virgin tech, just like columbine.

That's the bottomline.

thank you for sharing your story.
you describe the shooter as wearing a green vest with short hair. you are not the only person telling all of us he had short hair and was wearing green.

the media is showing us a kid dressed in black with longer hair. i'm sure you have seen the pictures... is this who you saw?:
Video from security cam: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=3592935n

the story the media is barfing out doesn't make sense. there is more to this than we are being told. it is possible the supposed killer was just a victim, while the real shooter is.. who knows. it is also possible there was more than one shooter, like you thought in the stair well. just tell us if who you saw is the same person in the video in the above link.

keep in mind that president bush was in town that day as well.

P.S. if you are concerned about gun control the only candidate who understands this constitutional amendment and will live by it is RON PAUL. other candidates are bullshitters who are on members of the CFR and should not be trusted. vote ron paul if you want to keep your rights and if you support the constitution.

I have had my CCW for 13 years, got it as a show of support for the 2dn Amendment, and where I live I rarely feel the need to carry. I used situational awareness to avoid the more likely areas where I would need to carry.

NW's experience, and the changing societal climate are giving reason to reconsider my part time carry.

I only question what to do after an incident. What would you do if you stopped the perp to not be come a victim of panicked bystanders, and over eager first responders?
I do not want to be a victim, or collateral damage in the confusion of the response.

Thanks
Kevin

Thank you NW for your account. I am sick to my stomach just reading it and trying to put myself in this situation. I have a permit here in NE but as you say the "No Gun Zones" limit greatly our right to be able to defend our loved ones and ourselves. All Nebraskans should contact our elected leaders and make our voices heard. I am going to send links to your story to all my friends and relatives.
Thanks again, and God Bless.

In Missouri, the CCW law says that you are not allowed to carry when the sign has been posted. It is technically NOT ILLEGAL to carry into a posted premise, but if they ask you to leave, you must do so or face a trespassing charge and a $100 fine. The solution seems easy to me,
Keep it concealed.....

Thanks for writing this. I'm a woman with a concealed carry permit. I'm sure I could not have made an accurate shot from 60 yds with my .38 revolver. Rifles are so accurate. Would I have tried to sneak up behind him and get closer? What if somebody mistook me for the bad guy and shot me in the back?

Chico;

You're right, a gunowner does KNOW his weapons. You apparently don't.

Check your local gun store. Beretta redsigned the old 92 a year or two ago and renamed it the 90-2. It's fugly, IMHO. It looks like the Beretta Storm's older brother.

Thank you for re-living that terrifying time so you could share it with us. With me. Thank you.

I also have a CCW, but because of a paranoid spouse I do not carry often. The mall we frequent also has the "no guns" sign, and in NC it's not just "asked to leave" if caught, I risk arrest. In NC, it is "legal" to carry openly everywhere, but if you try to they arrest you on the charge of "creating an environment of fear". The only people who can carry weapons with confidence are the criminals.

Let's see... The SCOTUS decides to hear a 2nd Amendment case, and some thug goes on a spree in a gun free zone. Very convenient.

I'll second the Ron Paul comment too. Your banner ad may say "Fred", but Fred is just another two-faced politician. I will trust a solid and consistant voting record. I say Yes to Dr. No.

I am very very sorry you had to go through something like this. I am sure you are scared and think that having a gun with you would have helped save lives. I strongly disagree with you. Guns have no place on anyone unless you are a police officer or in the military. It is because of our crazy gun laws that this nut case had a gun with him. By the way this was NOT A HUNTING GUN. GUNS ARE BAD AND PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO OWN THEM. I am very sad for the families who lost their loved ones because of some outdated gun laws.

Sorry Anonymous, but reality (and some live people in a Colorado church) disagree with you. Go back to enabling genocide and murder.

Ok, say you had a gun and blew the shooter away – now what do you do when a thousand heavily armed cops descend on the scene and you have a smoking gun in your hand? I don’t think you get to be “interviewed”… Yes, our laws are totally wrong, but unfortunately today even the legitimate carrier is at severe risk.

I think we should set up a fund that helps qualified people financially complete the CCW class. Perhaps there should be some sort of discount on their first purchase of a firearm. I'm willing to donate $100 to one person that was in Von Maur at the time of the shooting that would like become a CCW licensee. Godspeedsmiley101 is my screen name on Ebay- I can be emailed from there.

Anonymous, on Sunday 7/09 an armed law abiding citizen just stopped a murderer in a Colorado church by herself with her legally owned pistol & concealed carry permit. Had the people in the church been forced to wait for the police as you advocate, who knows how many more would have been killed.

Petrified, unless the cops come in the few seconds after you've neutralized the perpetrator, your best bet is to reholster your pistol. When they do arrive on scene, make sure your empty hands are visible & wait for the officers to approach you. Follow their orders exactly & it is unlikely you will be shot.

GUNS ARE BAD AND PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO OWN THEM. I am very sad for the families who lost their loved ones because of some outdated gun laws.

I have a question for you. If the fellow had been bashing peoples skulls in with a ball bat, does that mean we ban ball bats also?

The answer is to keep it in it's holster until you are in a position to fire on the perp, then you draw and shoot. When you stop shooting, reload, and holster it. Wandering around with it in hand both before shooting, and afterwards, is not a healthy act. Even if you have a badge, if you are not in uniform, don't look like a target to other responders. In a shots fired incident like this, a visible gun is a threat, and may slow down or stop a necessary response to the real shooter(s). If it takes more than 2 seconds to access your concealed gun, you are doing something wrong.

your story is very moving, and I thank you for sharing it . However the ideas you present are flawed. Honestly, yes if you had a gun you could've saved people from dying. If you had a gun you may have been able to kill him before he did more harm. However look at the long term scheme of things, If anyone can carry an open gun anywhere whats to stop random shootings all across omaha? If someone gets upset all it takes is a little misguided anger to pull out a gun and shoot someone. More often than not allowing an loosely concealed weapon would be more harmful. We dont have mass shootings every day (thank god for that) therefore this instance would't apply often enough for it to be a legitimate argument. I see your stance, but Im sorry I dont agree with it.

Anonymous ninnies posting nonsense:

"If anyone can carry an open gun anywhere whats to stop random shootings all across omaha? If someone gets upset all it takes is a little misguided anger to pull out a gun and shoot someone."

Newsflash! There are two million people in the army, many of them 18 years old some 17 years old. THEY ALL HAVE MACHINE GUNS!!!!!!!

I wonder why they don't just blow each others heads off based on your soccer-mom-government-school "logic?"

Anyway, to the survivor, if I had been there, ARMED, I would have done the exact same thing he did.
GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE. Period.

He didn't bear down on you, so what happened wasn't any of your business. It isn't your job to arrest people, shoot people or protect people (except your family of course, and they weren't there)

Besides who wants to hang around and get shot/arrested/prosecuted/threatened etc etc?

I ain't protecting no sheeple, ever.
If I did they would probably sit on my jury and vote me guilty for carrying at all......

There are only about 1 million crimes commited with firearms each year, there are over 2.5 million defensive uses of firearms each year (thats almost 7000 times a day).

In 80% of defensive gun uses it was a concealed weapon.

77% of crime occurs away from home but less than 27% of defensive gun uses occur away from home (do to laws restricting concealed carry).

If this is a totally real account then you need to go to the press and do it with your name on it. These anonymous posts on the web don't carry much weight because of all the lying creeps out there. Even just signing it would lend weight.

Open carry is a strong deterrent but has it's advantages and disadvantages. The main disadvantage is society in general (IE, Omaha, and Lincoln) really doesn't want to see a law-abiding citizen walking around in plain clothes with a gun exposed. A guy in a suit, or some kind of uniform with a badge is generally accepted and doesn't cause attention.

Main advantage of CCW. No one knows who's carrying. John Lott, Jr said the main fear of most criminals is being shot. If the criminal doesn't know who might have a gun, they might not attack. A mall is the last place you would think a CCW License holder would be found. I've always carried at the malls.

Open carry doesn't work in Omaha. I'm evidence of that because I was detained for over 30 minutes and questioned by OPD, then asked to put my gun the trunk of my car when I tried to carry open in a public place! This incident happened in 2001. Since then I have kept my gun out of sight.

The Westroads Mall Shooting is a tradegy we will never forget. Please remember and act appropiately when confronted a life threatening situaution. The best rule to follow in my opinion is- "Walk softly, carry a big stick!"

Len-KC said...

CCW Laws in Missouri are slanted in favor of the permitee with a posted facility's option if you are found to be carrying is to ask you to leave. I have held my permit since day one and I have, and will continue to, willfully ignore any and all postings. If it's concealed the only time anyone will see it is if it needs to be seen. I will never be put in that position, never.

That reminds me of one of my mottos: Be nice and carry a gun.

since semantics seems to be the deal here, to whoever quoted this you might want to actually join the military and then speak.
"Newsflash! There are two million people in the army, many of them 18 years old some 17 years old. THEY ALL HAVE MACHINE GUNS!!!!!!!" The only people walking around with "machine guns" is guy carrying the M249, it is a squad serviced weapon, it is serviced by a minimum of 2 people. The M4 now is a select fire weapon in most cases, but that is an assualt weapon not a machine gun, as many have noted here. No one liked it when the news reported the kid had an automatic weapon, so the same goes when you misquote it as a machine gun. The reasons you don't see this kind of mass killings is because of the training and there is NO weapon on a military base that is un-accounted for. You can not bring a concealed weapon onto most bases, very few exceptions. Offutt and many others will not let you on with any type of weapon, even as a police officer.

The body count would be more like 90 if a bunch of people in the store had CCW permits and elected to draw and shoot it out like its Dodge City.

Yeah, cuz that's what happens every day in all the states that "allow" concealed carry, and also among the population that doesn't ask permission to exercise our rights, right? O_o (Hmmm....Wasn't the blood supposed to run knee-deep in the streets if CCW laws were passed?)

Thank you for posting your account and your opinion about 2nd amendment rights. I worked at Von Maur, Westroads before moving back to Utah a year ago. People I love were working that day, people I knew died.
I also grew up in the Salt Lake City Area and Trolley Square has been a big part of my life and my children's. I remember the first time I went there at 5 years old, the last time my kids and I went to just hang out, and hundreds of memories in-between.
These two incidents have really hit close to home and affected me deeply. I also lost my sister to suicide in march, so for me, this has been quite a year.
I would not be comfortable carrying a weapon, but I respect and appreciate those of you who do take the time to practice and learn to handle guns appropriately, and who would not be afraid to use one in situations like these.
Thank you again for sharing your story. I believe it was God, not luck, that saved you although, victim's and survivors do appear to be random in these circumstances. I thank Him for preserving your life, and those of your family. May God continue to bless and protect you.
Grace & Peace, Nida

This comment shows how utterly ignorant you are of guns. YES, it was a hunting gun, semi auto (one trigger pull, one bullet). It LOOKED like an assault weapon, a PURELY COSMETIC feature, but functioned as a normal hunting rifle. Assault weapons, by definition are FULLY AUTOMATIC and have been illegal to own since 1939.
Is it any wonder that this shooting occured at a place that bans concealed carry? Those stupid signs on the entrance doors only tell criminals that there is nobody inside to stop them!

Thanks for sharing this vivid account. It brings a very real view of why gun free zones are very dangerous for all of the citizens who are disarmed by policies as foolish as a "gun free zone" which disarm everyone except for the criminals.

Gun free zones what a joke. They should really call them shopping sprees for bad guys.

I am so proud of NW and his actions at the mall that awful day at Von Maur. He went out the fire exit door setting off the alarms. He may have saved a lot of lives that day. I am so glad that NW made it out alive that day. God was with him as he has a purpose for his life. If we can use this tragedy to make good come out of it, no matter how small then we have not given the shooter his day of glory. I know that NW's life has changed for the better and it has affected my life as well.I know as I am NW's mother. I will also get a carry permit and support this cause. I am proud of NW for sharing his story.

No, not illegal to own, just very strictly regulated. I held an honest-to-God M-16 in my hands at work this week. $13,000.00 + a $200.00 'tax' stamp, and an 8 to 12 week wait for our benevolent government to complete the paperwork.
